Karen Fiander, Compliance Manager at Meclec, approached British Safety Council’s Wellbeing team as she wanted to introduce an in-company Workplace Wellbeing Programme. She says, “When we initially teamed up with British Safety Council back in August 2025, we had no Workplace Wellbeing Programme in place, and we wanted to plug that gap. We form part of a supply chain as a ‘safe contractor,’ offering electrical & mechanical engineering services to a wide range of commercial customers, in particular facilities management companies, and we knew that having this in place would keep us ahead of our competitors.”

British Safety Council’s expertise in the field recognises that there is never a one-size-fits-all solution to mental health and wellbeing in the workplace and, instead, works collaboratively with each business to identify their own unique needs to support them in developing and implementing a tailored wellbeing strategy.

With Meclec, this meant working strategically to identify a wellbeing strategy that would work for them rather than simply rolling out an off-the-shelf solution. Karen says, “Measures that we have put in place such as a ‘Compliment Reward Scheme,’ ‘Employee Recognition Scheme’ and placing a couple of members of staff on a ‘Mental Health First Aid Course’ has enhanced overall awareness from colleagues that our Workplace Wellbeing Programme is being ‘built’. A healthy ‘air of competition’ amongst our staff also now exists through the reward/recognition scheme!”

Workplace wellbeing is critical for every organisation, but determining the right approach can be challenging. With an ever-growing range of services and evidence pointing in different directions, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. British Safety Council’s dedicated Wellbeing Support Manager was able to ask Meclec where they wanted to start, and how do they want to ensure their efforts focus on what truly matters for their colleagues?

Karen continues, “British Safety Council provided us with a Wellbeing Support Manager – Dana Brandusea - who has proved invaluable to us. What we initially perceived as being a daunting task of having to create a wellbeing programme, has thankfully been broken down into ‘bite sized’ achievable goals for us. Even just a few months into the programme, we can see that we possess a well-structured wellbeing programme, which is continually being enhanced.

“From not having a Workplace Wellbeing Programme at all, through to possessing one, means that our small company will not get left behind amongst our competitors. Our company is growing so our workload is getting heavier, and we have also recently moved our office premises which restricted our time constraints further. However, our Wellbeing Support Manager, Dana Brandusea has assisted us in reaching ‘achievable’ goals without being over-whelmed, that can be met in the present busy climate.

“Collaborating with British Safety Council on our Workplace Wellbeing Programme has enabled us to take time to say ‘Thank-you’ to our staff. Colleague recognition is now more evident, and we look forward to promoting a healthy and happy workplace.”

British Safety Council’s Workplace Wellbeing Workplace Programme helps organisations to create and implement a wellbeing strategy to support employees. Plus, as part of their charitable offerings British Safety Council have a number of free places available on the programme for their UK SME members.
