What is NEBOSH?

NEBOSH stands for National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health, a UK awarding organisation offering professional qualifications in health, safety and environmental management.

As an examination board, NEBOSH develops qualifications, sets syllabuses, quality assures Learning Partners and awards qualifications. Training is delivered by accredited Learning Partners such as British Safety Council. NEBOSH courses are varied and cater to all levels of staff in a range of workplaces.

The courses offer globally recognised qualifications such as the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, which are excellent first steps towards becoming a fully qualified health and safety professional. Qualifications are also available for Construction Safety and for Fire Safety and Risk Management.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is an ideal starting point for people looking to begin a career in health and safety management or to formalise previous training. It is a Level 3 qualification, equivalent to A Level.

Both the NEBOSH National General Certificate and the NEBOSH International General Certificate do not require any previous health and safety knowledge but are a good basis for those looking to progress to a NEBOSH National Diploma. The NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma is regulated at Level 6 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), comparable in academic level to a bachelor's degree, although it is a professional vocational qualification rather than an academic degree.

NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

The National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is one of the UK’s most widely recognised health and safety qualifications. It is specified in many health and safety job adverts and can help improve career prospects. Successful learners meet the academic requirements for the appropriate level of IOSH membership, subject to IOSH’s current membership criteria.

NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

The NEBOSH International General Certificate course focuses on how health and safety management can be applied in the workplace. The course has a high pass rate and holders can apply for membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or progress to the International Diploma.

NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK)

Targeted at managers and supervisors, the NEBOSH Construction Certificate focuses on practical health and safety management to ensure that construction work is undertaken safely and with no risk to health.

NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management

The National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management course focuses on practical fire safety management for low risk workplaces. This is the leading fire safety qualification in the UK and will train holders to be able to carry out fire risk assessments.

NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

Considered the “Gold Standard” of health and safety qualifications, the NEBOSH National Diploma is a requirement in around half of all health and safety job adverts. Diploma holders are estimated to earn 16% more than those who do not have the qualification.

The NEBOSH Diploma is a degree level qualification, meeting the academic requirement for Graduate IOSH membership and is intended for those pursuing a career as professional health and safety advisors.

NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is aimed at health and safety professionals who want to advance their career or progress to further study as a postgraduate. It is highly sought-after by employers from a range of industries.
