Upon completion of this course, delegates will be able to explain:

  • Explain what is net zero and related terms 
  • Explain the urgency of the underlying climate science driving the net zero agenda 
  • Explain the main international policy context for responding to the climate crisis 
  • Explain the UK policy context and drivers 
  • Explain the risks and opportunities of net zero including on future business viability, reputation, supply chain vulnerabilities etc 
  • Explain the business and environmental benefits of low carbon goods and services 
  • Explain the requisite corporate governance, resourcing and accountability for delivering net zero 
  • Explain how to establish a greenhouse gas inventory across all three scopes 
  • Explain the main principles of greenhouse gas accounting (including using activity data and emission factors) 
  • Explain what carbon neutral means and its application for organisations, products and services 
  • Explain how to establish science-based targets (methodologies) 
  • Explain how to establish a net zero strategy (near- and long-term targets) 
  • Implement a decarbonisation plan with suitable targets and milestones to deliver on a science-based target and/or net zero objective 
  • Explain how to reduce greenhouse emissions where these are influenced but not directly controlled (Scope 3) 
  • Explain how to communicate externally about responses to the climate crisis, net zero and making robust green claims 

Who is this course for?

This course is ideally suited for supervisors and managers across all sectors and has no formal entry requirements; however, it is strongly preferred that the candidate is in a practising role that will allow them to deeply understand the areas explored over the duration of the course.

What’s the outcome?

Be awarded a Pathways to Net Zero certificate from Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), global professional body for over 20,000 individuals and 300 organisations working, studying or interested in the environment and sustainability.

Course requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however it is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.

Assessment and results

The assessment for Pathways to Net Zero consists of an online 20 question multiple-choice. The test is completed through the IEMA assessment portal and candidates are sent a link upon registration to the assessment.

You will receive your certificate parchment within 8 weeks of the successful completion of the course.

Learning progression: What’s next?

Once completed, our students often continue their studies by completing a NEBOSH National General Certificate or Foundation in IEMA, or sometimes broadening their knowledge with our shorter courses, such as BSC Risk Assessments.

Learner’s Agreement

British Safety Council will:

  • Use suitably qualified and experienced tutors to deliver the tuition
  • Cover all the specification learning outcomes
  • Provide or direct you to the information you need to pass the qualification
  • Provide you with expert advice on revision and examination technique
  • Respond in a timely manner to any queries
  • Be diligent and courteous at all times.

You must:

  • Attend all scheduled sessions
  • Contribute to group discussions in a positive manner
  • Endeavour to be active, rather than passive in terms of learning
  • Complete the required number of revision hours
  • Pay particular attention to advice regarding revision and examination technique
  • Bring any learning difficulties to our attention at the earliest opportunity.

Virtual Classroom

Study this two-day course remotely and learn ‘live’ with a tutor just as you would in a classroom.

Students join via the web using a PC, laptop or tablet. The course is run using Zoom, but students don’t need to download any software.  Throughout the course, students can see and interact with the tutor and with each other.

A: You do not need to supply your own study materials for your IEMA course. Learners doing the live on line course will be provided with all the necessary information online, while those doing the classroom-based course will be provided with the appropriate physical learning materials

A: The IEMA Certificate is valid for life. We do recommend that you regularly refresh your knowledge.
