IOSH Working Safely is a short entry level course covering the essentials of health and safety in the workplace. It is aimed at all employees in all types of organisations.

This course looks at people’s responsibilities for health and safety, workplace hazards and risks, and how to control them.

IOSH Working Safely Course Information

Upon successful completion of the course and assessment, students are awarded a Working Safely certificate from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the world’s largest health and safety membership organisation

Course requirements

There are no entry requirements for this certificate, however it is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the course.

Course overview

The course is divided into four modules:

  1. Introducing working safely
  2. Defining hazard and risk
  3. Identifying common hazards
  4. Improving safety performance.


Regardless of your chosen route of study, you will have the option to complete your assessment on line, whereby you will receive instant results and feedback. 

To achieve your IOSH Working Safely certificate you must complete one assessment:

  • An online 30 multi-format questionnaire with hazard spotting exercises.

Learning progression: What’s next?

Once completed, our students often continue their studies by completing a IOSH Managing Safely, a NEBOSH National General Certificate or sometimes broadening their knowledge with our shorter courses, such as British Safety Council Risk Assessments.

  • Pay particular attention to advice regarding revision and examination technique

1. How long does an IOSH certificate last for?

An IOSH Working Safely or Managing Safely certificate is valid for life. We do recommend that you regularly refresh your knowledge.

2. What happens if I have to re-sit my assessment?

We will continue to offer you support and access to resources until you pass. We will provide two free attempts on your assessment, thereafter the assessment fees are not included.

Digital Learning

If you can’t find time in your busy schedule to attend a classroom course, then online training is the answer.

The structured online programme includes interactive modules, a 3D hazard spotting exercise and practice assessments. You have five months to complete the course and assessments.

Important message:

As of 12 May 2017 Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) will no longer accept IOSH Working Safely certificates achieved via an e-learning assessment as a route to obtaining the green Labourer card.

A: Finding out which IOSH course is right for you will depend on your job role. If you are a manager, supervisor or team leader, or if you are in any way responsible for the safety of others at work, the IOSH Managing Safely course is recommended.

For other employees and interested parties, IOSH Working Safely provides a manageable overview of safety in the workplace.

Q: What are the differences between IOSH Working Safely and IOSH Managing Safely?

A: The IOSH Working Safely qualification is suitable for all workers and is completed through a one-day course in the classroom or typically takes three hours of online study.

The IOSH Managing Safely course takes place over three days in the classroom, or typically 8 - 12 hours of online study, and is designed for those responsible for the safety and well-being of one or more person in the workplace.
