At British Safety Council, we believe that learning and giving back go hand in hand. This belief lies at the heart of everything we do, whether we’re training future safety leaders, running wellbeing campaigns, or supporting life-changing charitable initiatives for the world’s most vulnerable workers.
Every time someone chooses to train with us, they play their part in a virtuous circle that supports safer and healthier workplaces, at home and around the world. While learners develop new skills and gain new qualifications, they also support providing OSH training to migrant workers in India and female H&S leaders across Africa. Simply put, education empowers individuals; giving back empowers everyone.
We recently published our Impact Report, which looked back at our work throughout 2024 and which captured a year defined by putting this kind of impact into action; to help the workers of today and tomorrow thrive.
Knowledge that protects; training that connects
In 2024 alone, British Safety Council trained over 12,000 students across 95 countries, with learners joining us from the UK, India, Europe, and beyond. Our flexible training options, delivered digitally, virtually, and in-person, make it easier than ever for organisations to upskill their teams in everything from asbestos awareness to culture change for leaders.
We’re especially proud of the growing success of our unique Learning Zone, which has transformed online training into an online community, with study support, digital assessments, and on-demand materials.
And it’s not just about knowledge that protects, our students also gave our training a Net Promoter Score of 65, reflecting their high levels of satisfaction with both our trainers and our training offering.
Knowledge is power; giving back is purpose
What makes our training uniquely powerful is that it gives back by funding something greater. When organisations choose British Safety Council, they directly support our charitable work, from powerful campaigns to change UK legislation to charitable initiatives designed to help those who, all too often, fall through the cracks.
In 2024, in response to a growing number of workers without any form of OSH training, we launched our first charitable initiative in India, with the Work Fair and Free Foundation. Together, we’ve provided training to 28 community trainers, who have coached more than 1200 migrant and informal workers across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. This cascade of knowledge equips some of the most at-risk individuals with vital health and safety awareness that can prevent injury and, most importantly, save lives.
In Africa, we continued our work with the Society of Women in Health and Safety and Environment (SOWSHE-A), enabling 10 of their members to gain internationally recognised qualifications. This work supports communities, increases opportunity and makes workplaces safer for all. We even extended this initiative to cover environmental management, recognising the impact of climate change on some of the world’s most vulnerable workers.
Training changes your future; charity changes someone else’s
Another example of this virtuous circle is our Keep Thriving charitable campaign, focused on improving and supporting worker and workplace wellbeing. Throughout 2024, we held 6 free workshops across the UK and awarded £70,000 of funding to small and medium enterprises to develop their wellbeing strategies.
These workshops and funding opportunities have given organisations the tools and resources they need to create workplaces in which workers can thrive, improving productivity and profitability.
Our funding awards have supported Bolton-based children’s charity Bolton Lads and Girls Club to improve organisational wellbeing, supported HandsHQ to host their very first wellbeing stand-down day, and provided SafeSite Facilities with the resources to make all line managers mental health champions.
This is the power of choosing training with purpose.
Every qualification earned, every course completed, and every learner empowered strengthens the safety and wellbeing of countless others around the world. Whether it's a factory floor in Manchester, a construction site in Mumbai, or an office in Nairobi, the ripple effect of high-quality training is both real and far-reaching. Together, we’re building a world where everyone, everywhere, has the knowledge, support, and opportunity they need to thrive.
