The NEBOSH Diploma is the flagship NEBOSH qualification. Valued by employers, this is an essential qualification for those seeking a senior position in health and safety management. It is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding required for undertaking a career as a health and safety professional and it also provides a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.

On completion of the qualification, you will be able to:

  • Understand how health and safety legislation is applied in a workplace and the possible enforcement actions that could be taken for non-compliance and how they contribute to health and safety legal actions.
  • Use different types of health and safety leadership approaches and to be able to influence health and safety issues at all levels.
  • Influence organisational and health and safety workplace culture.

A programme of study is based around a minimum of 191 taught hours and approximately 144 hours of self-study for an overall total of 335 hours (excluding assessment time).

Assessment

The qualification comprises of three assessments:

  1. ND1 Assignment (in four parts - simulations, workplace based activities, reflective tasks and a research project)
  2. ND2 Case study (simulation only)
  3. ND3 Case study (simulation only)

Each unit can be completed remotely accompanied by an online closing interview discussing your work.

The grading is based on the combined percentage mark for the 3 units. All three units must achieve a pass in order to be awarded the qualification.

Qualification Level

The NEBOSH National Diploma is accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) at level 10 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).  For users in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, this is comparable to a vocationally-related qualification (VRQ) at Level 6 in the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).  In academic terms, a Level 6 VRQ is comparable to an honours degree.

Professional Recognition

The NEBOSH National Diploma meets the academic requirements for:

  • Graduate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Grad IOSH) for those registered in the UK.
  • Member status (MIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

Language Requirements

Assessments are available in English only.

Your standard of English must be such that you can both understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. 

NEBOSH recommends that non-native speakers undertaking this qualification should have a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 or higher in IELTS tests.  For further information please consult the IELTS website: www.ielts.org

Enrolment Period

When you pass your first unit, your enrolment period is automatically re-set and you have a further 5 years to pass the remaining two units. In other words, your first unit has a shelf-life of 5 years. If you do not pass the remaining two units within 5 years, your first unit will expire and you will have to retake this unit in order to pass the qualification.

Assessments

We anticipate that it will take you around 60 hours to complete the ND1 assignment and 40 hours each for the ND2 and ND3 case studies.

Booking your assessments

Your assessments should be booked through your British Safety Council account manager. If you’re not sure of their contact details, email [email protected]   The deadline for booking an assessment is 6 weeks prior to the examination date. 

Examination preparation days

We run free assessment preparation days.  These are ‘live online’ which means that you join a Zoom call remotely using a computer or tablet.  You don’t have to download Zoom software; you can join over the web.  You will be able to see and interact verbally with the tutor and with the rest of the group.

You are strongly advised to attend these days and should come to the day fully revised so that you can practice applying your knowledge and understanding to the questions set.

The British Safety Council will:

  • Use suitably qualified and experienced tutors to deliver the tuition
  • Cover all the specification learning outcomes
  • Provide or direct you to the information you need to pass the qualification
  • Provide you with expert advice on revision and examination technique
  • Respond in a timely manner to any queries
  • Be diligent and courteous at all times.

You must:

  • Attend all scheduled sessions
  • Contribute to group discussions in a positive manner
  • Endeavour to be active, rather than passive in terms of learning
  • Complete the required number of revision hours
  • Pay particular attention to advice regarding revision and examination technique
  • Bring any learning difficulties to our attention at the earliest opportunity.

Tutor Support

Your tutor will provide support in relation to subject content and assessment preparation. They can be contacted by telephone, video call or email.

Results and Certificates

Results are released 50 working days after the submission date for the assessment. A unit certificate will be issued 20 working days after the notification date for each successful unit.  

Once all three unit assessments (ND1/ND2/ND3) are passed, a  combined percentage mark will give an overall grade for the qualification (Distinction/Credit/Pass).

Prior Learning

The NEBOSH Diploma is an advanced qualification and an equivalent to a Foundation level Degree.  Therefore, to increase your chances of successfully passing your NEBOSH Diploma, the British Safety Council strongly recommend that you have prior learning gained through previous health and safety qualifications, such as the NEBOSH National General Certificate, before undertaking this course.  If you do not hold such a recognised qualification, please contact [email protected]  to discuss your options.  Please also see the recommend knowledge required by NEBOSH here.

The six-week course (6 x 1-week blocks) is delivered over a period of nine months by highly qualified and experienced tutors in an interactive and engaging manner which makes learning easier.

Students join via the web using a PC, laptop or tablet.  The course is run using Zoom, but students don’t need to download any software.  Throughout the course, students can see and interact with the tutor and with each other.

The three sets of written examinations can be taken in January and July, and there are four submission dates each year for the workplace-based assignment.
