The Award Scheme
The International Safety Awards scheme is devised to recognise and reward organisations that show a commitment to improving corporate health and safety.
Applicants are required to submit a completed information form providing our external adjudicants with:
- a number of key documents relating to health and safety in your organisation
- demonstration of board level commitment to health and safety, and
- details of significant health and safety advances in your organisation for the qualifying year.
The award is also acknowledged by the Health and Safety Executive as a powerful motivator for achieving high safety standards, and enabling winning organisations to gain a range of benefits including:
- External endorsement of a consistent safety record, if successful year-after-year;
- Staff pride in achieving international recognition for their efforts; and
- Possible reductions in insurance premiums.
The Winners' Banquet
Every year, hundreds of British Safety Council member organisations achieve an International Safety Award, and every year the British Safety Council hosts a magnificent celebratory black tie banquet for the winners.
Banquet attendees are presented with their award before enjoying the evenings' entertainment. As 2008 was the 50th banquet, the four course meal was followed by a thrilling line up of acts that included fireworks and a magnificent cabaret. The banquet is the most stylish and spectacular safety awards ceremony in the UK and is regarded as the premier event for acknowledging commitment to improving health and safety performance.
The Banquet took place this year on 16 May at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London. Winning organisations are contacted about the banquet in April.
For more information about the award scheme or the banquet, please phone +44 (0)20 8600 5571 / 5598 or e-mail us at corporateaffairs@britsafe.org

I offer my congratulations to all of the organisations being presented with an award by the British Safety Council.
These awards recognise the critical success they have achieved in their pursuit of excellence in the management of health, safety and environmental matters. This event gives me the opportunity to publicly recognise the important contribution that the British Safety Council makes in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice. The Government would like to place on record its appreciation of the support given by the Council in raising awareness of the benefits of effective health, safety and environmental management.
The challenge facing us is enormous. By continuing to work together in partnership with you, other stakeholders, employers and employees we will make considerable strides towards achieving our goal for health and safety including the reduction in the burden in employers and employees and cutting the 30 million working days currently lost each year through work-related ill health and injury.
Rt. Hon. Tony Blair,
the then Prime Minister - May 2007
