Firms not assessing if mental health interventions work, finds poll

More than 57 per cent of firms are not using employee engagement surveys to inform and assess the effectiveness of mental health and wellbeing strategies, a survey has found.


Positively, 70 per cent of respondents ‘enthusiastically’ indicated that engagement with mental health and wellbeing in the workplace is increasing, albeit the majority identifying obstacles that are preventing ‘widespread engagement’. Obstacles in the way of achieving lasting culture change, for example, included:

  • Lack of resource and funding and lack of senior leadership buy-in
  • Lack of time, the pace of business, workload demands and resistance to change in an ever-changing work environment
  • Lack of staff buy-in, scepticism, people being unprepared to be open, existing entrenched unhealthy cultures, and the need to embed mental health and wellbeing into policy
  • Difficulty to achieve consistency in communications and that ‘these can only ever be as effective as the least engaged line managers’.

Commenting on the results, Claire Farrow, Conference Director & Head of Content at Mad World, which ran the poll, said: “While engagement with mental health and wellbeing in the workplace is increasing, there are still many obstacles when it comes to engaging employees right across the workforce and creating lasting cultural change.”

Organisers at Mad World, the mental health conference, looked at the responses of 321 cross-sector employers to find out how companies are managing mental health in their business.

Strategies companies are turning to included empowering colleagues to increase awareness of mental health, incorporating “how are you feeling” and “3 things to be thankful for” into team meetings and monthly 1-1 meetings with line managers covering welfare and stress.

42 per cent of respondents are using employee engagement surveys to inform and assess the effectiveness of mental health and wellbeing strategies. Half of this number do so as part of a general annual survey that includes some questions on mental health.

Only a few (11 per cent) had an annual survey focused on mental health and wellbeing in the organisation.

HSE could use its powers to shut businesses down if they fail to take measures to protect the health and welfare of their staff during the coronavirus pandemic, its chief executive Sarah Albon has said.
