Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering qualification teaches learners how to take personal responsibility for food safety, the correct procedures for maintaining a hygienic work environment and how to identify and control common risks to food safety.
All catering businesses have a legal responsibility to train their staff in matters of food hygiene. A high standard of food safety protects consumers' health and helps to maintain the reputation of the business.
This is a free-standing qualification designed for delivery as a short programme but is also well-suited for integration into wider vocational programmes of study. The qualification assumes no prior knowledge and learners will come from a diverse range of catering businesses and educational backgrounds.

What does it cover?
Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering qualification focuses on the importance of personal responsibility for food safety and the legal responsibilities of food handlers and food business operators.
The qualification highlights the importance of personal hygiene in food safety and teaches the learner effective practices including protective clothing, hand washing and personal illnesses.
It covers the importance of pest control and the sources and risks to food safety from contamination and cross contamination. The course extends beyond the kitchen and also covers stock control procedures, including deliveries, storage, date marking and stock rotation. It teaches learners how to deal with food spoilage including recognition, reporting and disposal.
How does it work?
Learning materials are provided to Approved Centres who subsequently deliver the training (recommended six hours). Centres then request the examination – available either online or paper-based – on a date and time of their choosing. The results of online examinations are available immediately while paper-based results and certificates are issued within five working days of receipt.
