Trustee for British Safety Council

Trustee for British Safety Council

British Safety Council is looking for a trustee with senior-level strategic operational experience in the charity or not-for-profit sector to provide fresh insights and expertise to our board.

British Safety Council

British Safety Council was founded in 1957 by James Tye, a passionate advocate for workplace safety. His experience as a World War II veteran, witnessing comrades drown because of faulty lifejackets, inspired him to lead ground-breaking campaigns at a time when workplace fatality rates were alarmingly high. James played a pivotal role in shaping the Health and Safety at Work Act, saving thousands of lives and establishing British Safety Council as a trusted leader and influential voice in health, safety and environmental management. Today, our charity continues his legacy by safeguarding the health, safety and wellbeing of workforces around the globe.

Trustee role

We have an exciting opportunity to join our board of trustees at a time of renewed focus and ambition. Our board is evolving to ensure we maximise our impact, with a particular emphasis on strategic decision-making and measurable outcomes.

As a trustee, you will play a key role in guiding the charity’s strategic direction, supporting its development and growth, and helping us achieve our vision ‘No one should be injured or made ill through their work’.

While a passion for improving health, safety, and workplace wellbeing is essential, we are not seeking candidates with professional experience in health, safety, and wellbeing or experience as trustees. Instead, we are looking for individuals with strong strategic and operational expertise who can bring new perspectives to our board and help us shape a future of innovation and measurable impact.

About you

We are particularly interested in individuals with:

  • Senior-level, strategic operational experience in the charity or not-for-profit sector
  • A passion for making a difference in the health and safety, wellbeing, or environmental management space
  • An interest in contributing to a board focused on creating positive impact through innovation and leadership.

We are committed to increasing diversity on our board, especially female representation, and strongly encourage applications from women. In return, we are committed to:

  • Sponsoring Trustee or non-Exec Director training, such as IOD
  • A more flexible approach to our contract tenure, allowing a rolling one-year tenure with a commitment of up to three years
  • Mentorship from senior Trustees/ex Trustees.

Time commitment

The Board of Trustees meets four times yearly in London and one strategy day, all scheduled in advance. Trustees will also be invited to undertake additional roles, including participation in sub-committees where appropriate, dependent on their areas of expertise or attendance at award presentations. The appointment is very rewarding but unpaid; however, all reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Application process

If you think you have the skills and experience and can commit the required time, please apply here to submit your CV and cover letter. For more information, contact Menaka Gamage, Head of HR at [email protected] or by phone 07350391417. Application closing date, Monday, 20 February 2025, with a view to interview possibly W/C 20 February via MS Teams.

British Safety Council is committed to diversity, equality and inclusion; therefore, we actively encourage and welcome applications from candidates of diverse cultures, perspectives and lived experiences. We are also proud to be a Disability Confident employer.
