For over sixty years the British Safety Council has been a trusted leader in health, safety and environmental management. Recently we’ve increased our focus on challenges such as wellbeing, in particular mental wellbeing, demonstrated through the launch of our charity ‘Mates in Mind’. We also increased our international focus by establishing an Indian operation. This year we step-changed our campaigning activity, making this an exciting time to be part of the British Safety Council.

Our vision is simple; ‘No one should be injured or made ill through their work’. Although we are a not-for-profit organisation undertaking charitable work, we do not fundraise, or receive Government grants. Therefore, our products and services are critical to our success; these include training, digital learning, qualifications, publications, audit, consultancy, awards and events.  At our heart we’re a membership organisation, with over 5,500 corporate members in over 60 countries. 

In response to the changing nature of the ‘world of work’ and the broadening of our focus, both in terms of product and geography, a new role has been created for a Chief Operating Officer.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will lead the areas of Finance, Information Technology, Programme Office, Operations / Logistics, Business Support, Human Resources, SHEQ, Estates and Catering services, providing support to the newly restructured business on a ‘shared service’ basis.

The Chief Operating Officer will lead the successful execution and delivery of BSC’s business strategy (both financially and operationally) in an entrepreneurial manner and ensure business outcomes (both commercial and charitable) are delivered.

The successful Chief Operating Officer will:

  • Be a qualified accountant and have the experience to take Board level accountability for Finance;
  • Have led transformational change through delivering technology-based solutions;
  • Have proven experience in leading various teams across a business at Executive level, preferably on a ‘shared service’ basis;
  • Be able to demonstrate their ability to be both hands-on when required as well as delivering strategic advice within a medium-sized organisation;
  • Be commercially focused.

The role will require occasional travel, both national and international.
