BSC Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health

How your grade is determined

Results for each component are reported as:

  1. Distinction
  2. Merit
  3. Pass
  4. Fail (above threshold)*
  5. Fail

* It is possible to fail a component but still pass the qualification (because of a particularly strong performance in the other component), provided that the candidate scores at least 40% in the failed component. This score of 40% is termed the 'threshold mark' and should not be confused with the pass mark. The pass mark will vary slightly from session to session depending on the level of difficulty of the short-answer question paper compared to previous sessions. These adjustments to the pass mark ensure that, over time, the pass standard is maintained.

Component 1

Component 1 (short-answer question paper) carries a weighting of 67%.

Component 2

Component 2 (risk assessment task) carries a weighting of 33%.

Marks for the two components are scaled and then aggregated to give a total scaled mark for the qualification as a whole. Qualification results are reported as Distinction, Merit, Pass and Fail.

Candidates who fail the qualification must resit both components at a future examination sitting in order to achieve a pass.
